T+A M 800 – Modular High-End Audio System with Rare Factory MM Phono Stage

With the M-Series, T+A (Theory + Application) took a fundamentally different approach from the all-in-one compact systems that dominated the market at the time. Rather than integrating every function into a single chassis, the engineers in Herford developed a genuinely modular high-end audio system consisting of individual components. Each unit—the preamplifier/tuner, power amplifier and CD player—was designed as a dedicated audiophile component, combining the performance of a traditional separates system with the convenience and elegance of a compact footprint.

The system offered here consists of the PT 800 M preamplifier/tuner (Preceiver), the powerful PA 800 M stereo power amplifier and the CD 800 M compact disc player. All three components are presented in excellent cosmetic condition, have been carefully inspected in our workshop and are in perfect technical working order. Naturally, the original T+A remote control is included.

At the heart of the system is the PT 800 M, combining a high-quality preamplifier, FM tuner and complete system control in a single unit. Its exceptionally wide bandwidth of 1 Hz to 300 kHz, extremely low distortion and outstanding signal-to-noise performance provide an ideal foundation for transparent and natural music reproduction.

A particularly desirable feature of this example is the factory-installed MM phono module. This optional upgrade was available only at considerable extra cost and was therefore specified on relatively few systems. It allows the direct connection of high-quality turntables equipped with moving-magnet cartridges, transforming the M 800 into a truly versatile control centre for both analogue and digital music sources. With the continuing resurgence of vinyl, this rare option has become one of the most sought-after features of the entire M-Series.

Power is supplied by the separate PA 800 M stereo power amplifier, delivering 110 watts per channel into 8 ohms, 150 watts into 4 ohms, and peak output of up to 300 watts into 2 ohms. A bandwidth extending to 300 kHz, an impressive slew rate of 60 V/µs, a damping factor exceeding 500, and a generously dimensioned 40,000 µF power supply illustrate the considerable engineering effort invested in its design. The result is exceptional control, remarkable transparency and effortless authority even with demanding loudspeakers.

Completing the system is the CD 800 M, featuring a precision transport mechanism, sophisticated 24-bit digital filtering and advanced oversampling technology. Its refined, natural presentation integrates seamlessly with the balanced sonic character of the complete system.

Sonically, the M 800 performs with a level of confidence rarely associated with compact audio systems. The combination of an exceptionally wide-bandwidth preamplifier, a high-current power amplifier and a finely engineered CD player produces an expansive soundstage, outstanding resolution and remarkable musical coherence. At the same time, the generous power reserves of the PA 800 M allow the system to drive even demanding loudspeakers with complete ease and composure.

As one would expect from T+A, build quality is exemplary throughout. Heavy metal chassis, beautifully machined aluminium front panels and meticulously engineered circuitry reflect the uncompromising design philosophy that has established T+A as one of Germany's most respected high-end audio manufacturers.
