Pioneer CT-91 – Reference Three-Head Cassette Deck – Mint – Fully Overhauled – Original Box
The Pioneer CT-91 belongs to the great cassette decks from the golden age of analogue recording and is an impressive example of the extraordinary engineering effort Pioneer invested in a high-end tape deck at the end of the 1980s.
Our example is exceptional. It appears to have seen remarkably little use and is in genuine mint cosmetic condition, while even retaining its original packaging.
With a high-quality cassette deck, however, appearance alone is not sufficient. The transport has therefore been completely overhauled by our specialist for reel-to-reel and cassette machines, after which the deck was professionally recalibrated and aligned.
This CT-91 therefore combines exceptional preservation with the specialist technical preparation that a cassette deck of this calibre deserves today.
Sophisticated Dual-Capstan Transport
At the heart of the CT-91 is an elaborate dual-capstan transport designed to maintain extremely stable and precise tape movement across the heads.
Two capstans provide controlled tape guidance through the critical head area.
This is particularly important in a high-quality three-head machine, as even very small irregularities in tape movement can affect speed stability, phase behaviour and recording accuracy.
Pioneer therefore devoted considerable engineering effort to reducing mechanical resonance and vibration.
Three separate motors perform the different transport functions:
- DC servo capstan motor
- DC reel motor
- DC auxiliary motor
The CT-91 is consequently an excellent illustration of just how sophisticated premium cassette mechanisms had become by the end of the 1980s.
Three Heads and True Off-Tape Monitoring
The CT-91 is a genuine three-head cassette deck.
Separate erase, record and playback heads allow each function to be optimised independently and, most importantly, provide true off-tape monitoring.
During recording, the signal that has just been recorded can immediately be reproduced by the separate playback head and compared with the source.
This makes it possible to assess the interaction between tape formulation, calibration and recording level while the recording is actually being made.
For serious recording, this direct comparison is one of the fundamental advantages of a high-quality three-head machine.
Exceptionally Substantial Mechanical Construction
Pioneer's engineering effort was by no means restricted to the transport itself.
The entire machine was designed with the suppression of unwanted mechanical resonance and electrical interaction in mind.
Features associated with this sophisticated construction include:
- substantial resonance-controlled chassis
- copper-plated chassis construction
- cassette stabilisation
- extensive damping and shielding
- substantial vibration-control feet
- careful mechanical separation of individual assemblies
At approximately 10.8 kg, the CT-91 is exceptionally substantial for a cassette deck.
This construction is not simply about appearance or feel. In magnetic tape recording, even minute irregularities in the movement of the tape relative to the heads can influence performance.
A rigid and well-damped mechanical foundation therefore contributes directly to stable tape travel and accurate recording and reproduction.
Short Signal Paths and Sophisticated Power Supply
The electrical design received similar attention.
Short signal paths, carefully separated circuit sections and a sophisticated power supply were intended to minimise interaction between audio, control and display circuitry.
This is particularly relevant in a cassette deck because the electrical signals generated by the tape heads are extremely small and require substantial amplification.
Keeping interference from the power supply, display and transport-control circuitry away from sensitive audio stages is therefore essential.
The considerable engineering effort invested in these areas clearly illustrates the position the CT-91 occupied within Pioneer's range.
Manual Recording Calibration
A premium cassette deck can only exploit the full potential of a tape when the recording electronics are properly matched to the characteristics of the individual cassette.
The CT-91 therefore provides adjustment of bias and recording calibration level.
This allows the recording characteristics to be optimised for the tape being used.
Even cassettes of the same basic formulation can differ in sensitivity and optimum bias requirements.
Particularly with high-quality Type II and Metal tapes, careful calibration can make substantially better use of the available recording potential than a fixed factory setting alone.
Thanks to the three-head configuration, the result can immediately be checked off the tape while recording.
Normal, Chrome and Metal Tape
The CT-91 supports all three important cassette formulations:
- Type I / Normal
- Type II / Chrome
- Type IV / Metal
Tape type is automatically detected and the basic recording parameters adjusted accordingly.
With high-quality Type II and Metal formulations in particular, a carefully calibrated three-head deck such as the CT-91 demonstrates just how far Compact Cassette technology had progressed by the late 1980s.
Dolby B, Dolby C and HX Pro
The CT-91 incorporates both Dolby B and Dolby C noise reduction.
It also features Dolby HX Pro.
Unlike conventional playback noise reduction, HX Pro operates during the recording process. It optimises effective bias particularly during high-frequency musical passages and can thereby improve available high-frequency headroom.
A switchable MPX filter for FM recordings is also provided.
Precise Recording-Level Control
The large fluorescent level display is one of the characteristic visual features of the CT-91 and also provides precise control during recording.
Recording levels can be carefully monitored, while the three-head configuration allows the actual result on tape to be heard immediately.
An electronic tape counter with several functions is also incorporated.
The combination of accurate metering, recording calibration and off-tape monitoring makes it clear that the CT-91 was conceived not simply as a playback machine but as a serious recording instrument.
Comprehensive Operating Convenience
Despite its sophisticated engineering, the CT-91 is remarkably convenient to operate.
Features include:
- music search for up to 15 selections forwards or backwards
- automatic tape-type detection
- recording mute and spacing function
- electronic tape counter
- true off-tape monitoring
- automatic monitor switching
- headphone output with independent level control
- timer recording and playback capability
- comprehensive electronic transport control
The CT-91 therefore combines serious recording technology with an unusually comprehensive range of convenience functions.
Contemporary Stereo Review Test
Particularly interesting today is a contemporary review of the Pioneer CT-91 published by Stereo Review in 1989.
Rather than looking back at the CT-91 as a vintage component, this review evaluated the machine when it was a current high-end cassette deck.
Stereo Review discussed the considerable engineering effort behind the machine, including its resonance-controlled construction, copper-plated chassis, sophisticated power supply, cassette stabilisation and dual-capstan transport.
Its original US list price of $950 further illustrates the market position Pioneer intended for the CT-91.
This was not an ordinary cassette deck. It was one of the machines with which the major Japanese manufacturers demonstrated just how far the Compact Cassette format could be developed.
Our Example – Virtually Unused and Technically Overhauled
With a cassette deck now more than three decades old, beautiful cosmetics are desirable but, in our view, not sufficient on their own.
Our CT-91 is exceptionally well preserved and appears to have seen remarkably little use. Its cosmetic condition can genuinely be described as Mint Condition.
Even the original packaging has survived.
The transport has been completely overhauled by our specialist for tape machines and cassette decks.
The deck was subsequently professionally recalibrated and aligned.
The future owner therefore receives not merely a beautifully preserved collector's piece, but a CT-91 whose crucial mechanical and recording functions have received the specialist attention appropriate to a machine of this calibre.

Our Verdict
The Pioneer CT-91 comes from a fascinating period in HiFi history.
By the end of the 1980s, the Compact Cassette was already a mature format, yet the major Japanese manufacturers continued pushing its technical limits.
Pioneer's answer with the CT-91 was an extraordinary level of engineering: three heads, dual capstans, three motors, a resonance-controlled and copper-plated construction, true off-tape monitoring, comprehensive recording calibration and sophisticated analogue electronics.
The result is a cassette deck that demonstrates just how accomplished the Compact Cassette could become at the end of the 1980s.
Our example adds a particularly rare combination: virtually unused cosmetic condition, genuine Mint Condition, original packaging and a transport that has been completely overhauled and professionally recalibrated.
An exceptional combination of preservation and specialist technical preparation that is increasingly difficult to find in a Pioneer CT-91 today.
The A1 arrived safely with me. The device was really well packaged by you and is visually in perfect condition for its age! In the meantime I have carried out some listening tests (with my rather modest components: Nuber nuWave floorstanding speakers, Dual 704 with Vinylmaster Silver and Technics Sl 1500 with Goldring IGC 910). In comparison, my Yamaha A-960, which has also been overhauled, can't keep up. The A1 reproduces the sounds extremely cleanly and precisely with great depth and pleasant dynamics, really great sound! More quality than I expected.
