TEAC CX-650R – Serviced 3-Head Stereo Cassette Deck with Auto-Reverse

The TEAC CX-650R is a beautifully engineered cassette deck from the great era of classic Japanese HiFi. With its substantial construction, large analogue needle meters and characteristic technical TEAC styling, it has exactly the appearance that makes high-quality cassette decks of this period so appealing today.

Technically, the CX-650R offers a particularly interesting combination of a 3-head configuration, two-motor transport and auto-reverse operation. The ability to play a cassette in both directions makes the TEAC an unusually versatile and convenient example of classic cassette technology.

The transport employs two motors, allowing different tape transport functions to be handled by separate drives. TEAC had extensive experience in the development of both reel-to-reel tape machines and cassette decks, and this engineering background is clearly reflected in the substantial mechanical construction of the CX-650R.

The machine supports normal, chrome and metal tapes. Metal tape compatibility was an important feature of sophisticated cassette decks of this period and allows excellent dynamic range and recording performance when suitable tape is used.

Dolby B noise reduction is provided, together with an MPX filter for recordings from FM broadcasts. The MPX filter suppresses interfering pilot-tone components and assists correct operation of the Dolby noise-reduction system.

One of the most attractive aspects of the CX-650R is its completely analogue presentation. Two large needle meters display recording and playback levels, while a traditional three-digit mechanical counter indicates tape position. Together with its substantial front panel and numerous controls, the CX-650R beautifully represents the character of high-quality HiFi equipment from around 1980.

Serviced and Recalibrated in Our Workshop

The TEAC CX-650R offered here has been technically serviced in our specialist workshop and subsequently recalibrated.

All relevant transport and electronic functions were checked and the machine carefully adjusted. Following completion of the work, comprehensive functional testing as well as extensive recording and playback tests were carried out.

With a cassette deck of this age, correct servicing and calibration are particularly important. Only a properly functioning tape transport and correctly adjusted recording and playback electronics allow a machine of this quality to realise its full potential.
